Building Hine Moana II and her First Owner
Hine Moana II was built sometime before 1963 by Jorgensen & Sons Picton for the incoming Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club commodore George Critchley. Carvel built with kauri planks, the Hine Moana II has the signature Jorgensen design.
Cmndr George Critchley owned Hine Moana II for a few years before selling her to owners in Picton. At one time Hine Moana II was surveyed to take tourists to Abel Tasman National Park. In fact, Hine Moana II was one of the first boats under survey for this job.
Hine Moana II Purchased By A Syndicate
In 2000 a syndicate was formed to buy the Hine Moana II for $120,000. Tony Bishop and Phil Hogg were members of the syndicate and Murray Cederman is also believed to be part of the syndicate. The owners moved Hine Moana II to Riwaka and later to the Motueka Yacht and Cruising Club at Port Motueka, where they are one of the original marina members.
Tony Bishop and Phill Hogg still owned the Hine Moana II in 2021. At this time she was powered by a 145hp Perkins Turbo 6354 which Bishop and Hogg have not reconditioned. However, they have over the years stripped back and repainted the hull and deck. They also employed Murray Robinson, who apprenticed under Peter ‘Pop’ Jorgensen, to complete some maintenance needed on the Hine Moana II including a gabbard leak that was successfully repaired.
