Building the Hinewai
Launched in 1968, the Hinewai is a Roger Carey design which was taken off Carey’s earlier boat design for Taonui in the 1950s. Built by John and Bev Gander in Waikawa, it is carvel planked with a draft of 1.5 metres. The boat was designed as a trawler style pleasure boat and was made from many different timbers. It had tallowwood keel and stem, red birch frames, an Oregon mast and teak decks made from timber salvaged from the amokura.
At some point the Hinewai was used to help grade the Waikawa Boating Club slipway.

The Hinewai’s Engines
Once powered by a 3 cylinder 371 series GM the Hinewai was repowered with a 2000 120hp John Deere diesel engine that gives Hinewai a top speed of 9 knots and a cruising speed of 8 knots. In February 2023 Hinewai was listed for sale on Marine Hub with this engine.
The listing also described Hinewai as having three single and one double berths in two cabins, a large wheelhouse mid-ship and a sailing set up that is mainly used as steadying sails.
Hinewai’s Owners
It is unclear how many owners the Hinewai has had but in 1982 Bob Linton purchased the Hinewai in Nelson. He took the Hinewai to HMB in Auckland via the East Cape and used the boat for cruising around the east coast of the North Island. Later the boat was purchased by Martin Farrand.
It is unclear who owns Hinewai now or where she is moored.
