Everything We Known About Tasman
Tasman was built by the Logan Brothers of Auckland for Captain J C Burford in 1902. She weighed 179 tons and had a steam engine.
Tasman was intended to replace the Lady Barkly on the Golden Bay run but Tasman proved to be unsuitable for the this shallow route. She was grounded in the Collingwood estuary on her maiden voyage! This continued to be a problem so they transferred Tasman to the Nelson, Motueka and Wellington runs.
In 1907 Tasman was purchased by the Anchor Shipping & Foundry Company for the nightly passenger service to Wellington. However, this didn’t last long as eighteen months later Tasman was working for the Northern Steam Ship Company based in Auckland.
Only a decade later Tasman would meet her end. She was wrecked on Rurima Rocks in the Bay of Plenty in August 1921.
